The Business of Analog: An Update

Where Did All The Cassettes Go?

2008 has already brought a number of changes to the analog market. Most manufacturers are discounting analog (cassette-based units), and moving to digital products. With Sony's discontinuance of the BM87DSTA, we don't know of any availability of new standard cassette transcribers still in production from any manufacturer.

Dictaphone, Lanier, Olympus, Sanyo, and Norcom have all have ended their analog offerings a while ago and are now offering digital products only. Sanyo is no longer in the transcription/dictation business in the US. If any of these units are being sold as new, they are remaining stock only.

In the near future, Philips may be the only manufacturer with a complete line of analog products. Philips has committed to staying with and supporting their mini-cassette analog product line with professional mini-cassette recorders and transcribers. They currently offer four mini-cassette recorders and a number of transcribers and dictator units.

The tried and true mini-cassette offers quality, durability and the promise--to those who love their tapes--of the option to keep analog alive.

Why the move to digital? The digital products are better sounding. Because they have fewer moving parts, they are also more dependable. Also, dictation can be transferred by computer to a transcriptionist anywhere in the world in a few minutes. We currently offer digital portable recorders, transcription players, PC dictate stations and phone-in digital systems. You may visit our digital products here and here.
